ETA wants to explain why high efficiency is required. Power station is offering AC. On the other hand, electronic or electrical equipment needs DC for its operation.
For example, 200W(VA) is required to generate 100W in case of efficiency 50%.
It means power of 100W is released in the power supply unit.
As a result, only half of energy was effectively used.
At the same time, cooling is required to stop increasing the temperature in the power supply or equipment. |
The only solution is naturally to cool by release fin or fan by force.
It takes energy born unnecessarily away outside the power supply unit to cool it by fan.
Fan requires power supply and also protecting circuit at its failure.
It means waste produces waste.
The function of power supply unit is to convert input power to output power without any loss. If conversion efficiency is becoming 100%, it can decrease heating of power supply unit and equipment. In case of power supply unit with high heating (low conversion efficiency), it requires a lot of measures to decrease temperature.
As a results, power supply unit without heating is required. High efficiency is so important requirement for power supply unit manufacturer in order to catch up with compact sizing and complication of electronic and electrical equipment nowadays. |

The relationship between efficiency and decrease of heating is shown below:
1. If changes power supply unit with efficiency 90% to another one with 96.5%, self loss decreases from 33.3W to 10.9W, that is, one third of the original one.
2. If changes power supply unit with efficiency 80% to another one with 96.5%, self loss is decreased to one seventh of the original one. |
